Osight, a domestic start-up company, hopes to provide customers with low-cost and high-performance lidar solutions. It has obtained the first round financing of tens of millions of yuan, invested exclusively by northern lights, and completed the delivery.
To seize the market of commercial lidar and reduce the cost is the first task. One of the reasons why the price of lidar represented by velodyne is tens of thousands of US dollars is that it adopts a non integrated way and needs to be assembled manually. Dozens of laser transmitters and receivers are matched one by one, so there is almost no possibility of mass production. Osight is trying to integrate lidar's optoelectronic devices, not only for mass production, but also for a fraction of velodyne's cost. This is also the method commonly used by domestic competitors.
To be truly commercial in the field of autonomous driving and driverless manufacturers, products and performance are still key. At the team level, osight was founded in 2015 as a start-up company. Its core team has been engaged in the research of lidar technology in the Chinese Academy of Sciences for nearly ten years, and has mastered the core key technology and key component technology of lidar system. A series of laser rangefinders and laser 3D imaging radars have been launched before, which are mainly used in the field of national defense. In 2012, the team developed a 32 line lidar prototype for long-distance and rapid mapping, with a detection distance of more than 5km, which is higher than the industry index.
At present, osight has completed the research and development of single line lidar, with a detection distance of 280 meters. This product integrates the radar sensor and the back-end data processing algorithm, which can move the data processing forward, reduce the workload of back-end processing, and greatly improve the processing efficiency. CEO Zhu Shaolan told 36 krypton that the team has the development ability of multi line laser radar and mastered solid-state scanning technology. The products in this field are already under development, but because there is no formal product coming out, we don't want to publicize it.
At present, osight is likely to be the first lidar manufacturer to complete vehicle test. Using the single line lidar products, plus the laser night vision camera, ADAS algorithm, a set of auxiliary driving oriented scheme has been made, and the vehicle test has begun. Zhu Shaolan, the founder, told 36 krypton that under the condition of strong positive sunlight, the product has a detection distance of more than 250m, an angle resolution of 0.18 degree and a distance resolution of 6mm; the company is carrying out further testing and optimization design for the product, and is expected to complete the internal testing and vehicle testing of lidar products by the end of 2016, and officially release the product. In the future, osight hopes to provide a complete set of intelligent 3D sensing and information processing system based on active photoelectric sensor for automatic driving.
Driven by the market prospect of automatic driving and driverless driving, manufacturers such as Beike Tianhua and radium intelligence have emerged on the domestic high cost performance lidar track, all of which have completed one or more rounds of financing. Velodyne, a well-known foreign lidar manufacturer, has also cooperated with large domestic generation factories, hoping to launch products with a price of $500. It may be an important factor in the competition to launch practical products as early as possible and to get through the cooperation with car manufacturers.
